Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB) used primarily in the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy. It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. By blocking this effect, Telmisartan helps to relax the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and reducing blood pressure. It may also be used to manage diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Common side effects of Telmisartan include dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and back pain. Some individuals may also experience upper respiratory infections, gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, and a drop in blood pressure, especially when standing up. In rare cases, Telmisartan can cause kidney problems, elevated potassium levels, or allergic reactions. Patients with a history of kidney disease, liver disease, or electrolyte imbalances should consult their healthcare provider before using this medication. Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended during treatment.
